Stephen Stills and Neil Young Get Hung up on “Hung Upside Down”

The song reportedly hadn’t been played in 57 years. But excitement notwithstanding, when Stephen Stills and Neil Young on Oct. 5 trotted out “Hung Upside Down” at the Harvest Moon benefit show in California, the results were disappointing.

Understandably, neither Stills nor Young could hit the notes. And their pickup band - the Promise of the Real rhythm section - was woefully under-rehearsed.

Perhaps it was enthralling in person - although truth be told the audience in the amateur video doesn’t look particularly excited and Stills’ frustration comes through at a couple of points. Buffalo Springfield fans who find themselves salivating the prospect of watching - Sound Bites raises hand - be wary: it serves as a powerful reminder that one cannot rewind one’s tape and is frankly, depressing.

Neil Young + Promise of the Real - “Revolution Blues”

Live from Dalhalla, Sweden, circa 2016, here’s a quick appreciation of maybe the most disturbing song in Young’s catalog — as any song written from the perspective of Charles Manson should be. Originally from On the Beach in 1974, he plays it all so menacingly here. Which is impressive enough, considering it takes place about 40 years after the fact. Still, it’s chilling to hear him play guitar like this and then shout out something like:

“Well, I'm a barrel of laughs with my carbine on I keep 'em hopping till my ammunition's gone But I'm still not happy, I feel like there's something wrong...”

That just makes me shudder.

Neil Young Wears Chrome Hearts on Sleeve at Farm Aid

- New backing band features Spooner Oldham, Micah Nelson and POTR rhythm section

Neil Young used his 2024 Farm Aid set to unveil his Chrome Hearts.

The new band dug in to a batch of (mostly) old songs with Young surrounded by frequent collaborator Spooner Oldham (keys); recent Crazy Horse guitarist Micah Nelson who shone on slide; and the Promise of the Real rhythm section of bassist Corey McCormick and drummer Anthony LoGerfo.

And by the time Young, Nelson and McCormick gathered in one of Young’s favored semi-circle as they played the interlude of the set-closing “Powderfinger,” there was some familiarity to go with the novelty.

At 78, Young’s age is apparent, particularly on quieter fare such as the three-shot offering of the Pegi Young-inspired “From Hank to Hendrix,” “Harvest Moon” and “Unknown Legend” that opened the show. Singing of the late mother of his children, Young’s voice occasionally faltered and his guitar playing stiffened here and there, making the Hearts’ flexibility all the more essential.

But Young is still Young, quirky with a wide-eyed, childlike belief in his causes. He asked the audience to name their favorite planet and to sing the refrain of “Love Earth” because, “when everyone says it together, the planet resonates.”

Plucked out of the Farm Aid livestream and released as a standalone, Young and the Chrome Hearts’ set also included a sparse and wistful “Journey through the Past,” with Young on piano; a full-band rendering of “Heart of Gold;” and a chunky, apropos “Homegrown,” replete with a sloppy false ending.
